Opuntia microdasys var. pallida f. cristata aka Opuntia microdasys monstrose is a form of Opuntia microdasys var. pallida (Bunny Ears) elected for its unusual growth. It is a clump-forming cactus with unusual wavy pads with bright yellow glochids arranged in dense clusters. It grows up to 2 feet tall. The distinctively shaped pads are up to 6 inches long and its flowers are yellow, up to 2 inches in diameter, and appear in spring. USDA hardiness zones 9a to 11b: from 20 °F to 50 °F. Bunny Ears Cactus needs for bright, direct sun, so outdoors is ideal. South-facing unobstructed window will work, western or eastern window exposure run as the second and third choices. While an actively growing it tolerates summer temperatures as high as 100 °F, don’t expect it to flower unless you also provide winter temperatures between 45 and 55 °F. Regardless of the season, it likes humidity in the 10 to 30 percent range. Use free draining cactus potting mix. The best container for your cactus is a clay pot, just slightly larger and deeper than the plant’s root system. It must have drainage holes because a pot without them or a pot that’s too large could make proper watering impossible.
Plants available are rooted divisions shown in 4″ pot. Plant will ship bare root. Will refund some of the shipping cost when placing an order for 2 or more plants.
