Mature Kalanchoe ‘Desert Surprise’ Or Kalanchoe Humilis

Kalanchoe humilis is a low-growing yet attractive succulent with variegation of white and maroon shades. Its leaves forms like a petal of a flower that makes you think if it’s a flower or not. Kalanchoe humilis can grow up to 3 feet tall when mature. This is a flowering succulent with green and purple blooms and can be best seen in full sun.

It is native to Tanzania, Malawi, and Mozambique. It is a nice addition to your collection of succulent plants especially if you have it displayed in a beautiful pot. When watering them, use the soak and dry method, and make sure there is an excellent draining hole in the pot to prevent root rot.

Fertilizing them once a month during their growing season using a slow-release fertilizer will help them grow faster and healthier. Kalanchoe humilis is toxic to humans and pets, so make sure not to mingle with them. You can propagate them via stem cuttings and seeds.

You can grow them in USDA Hardiness Zone 8a-10b at 10-40 degrees F.

The Mature Kalanchoe ‘Desert Surprise’ or Kalanchoe Humilis is a very different Kalanchoe with four inch, gray-green leaves that are strongly marked with maroon spots and stripes. Small, dull purple to green flowers rise ten inches above foliage and are not much of an attraction and can be removed. Plant in full coastal sun to light shade. Reaches 6-8″ in height and 6-8″ in width. Withstands temperatures of 36 degrees and higher.

 

Succulent plants are among the hardiest, most drought-tolerant in the world and very easy to maintain, as long as they are planted in a porous cactus/succulent soil, given proper drainage, daily bright light, and not over watered. Water occasionally to very little. Looks better with regular watering in hotter months.
