The Echinopsis Spachiana Cactus also known as a Torch Cactus is a tall, columnar cactus with short, golden spines that turn white with age. The stems have 10-15 low ribs lined with large, woolly areoles. This species is native to western Argentina where it can reach 7 feet tall, although it will stay small as a potted window sill cactus. As it grows, it can sprout new stems from its base and bloom with large white flowers up to 6 inches wide, that open at night. This cactus variety will not survive a hard frost, but if there is a risk of freezing temperatures it can be brought indoors to grow on a sunny window sill or under a grow light. Cactus need bright sunlight, great drainage, and infrequent water to prevent rot. Try to choose containers with drainage holes and use well-draining cactus/succulent soil. If planter does not have drainage holes, place a layer of gravel under the soil to protect the roots from sitting in water.
